Sheldon Brett Commits to UNLV

“I’m very excited for Sheldon, UNLV is a great opportunity for him, one that he earned through hard work and sacrifice.”  - Storm Head Coach/General Manager Lee Stone.

Campbell River Storm forward Sheldon Brett has committed to the University of Nevada Las Vegas Rebels for the 2017/18 season.

Campbell River fans had mixed feelings when the team acquired Brett from the Comox Valley Glacier Kings at the beginning of last season.

The 20 year old from Comox was not a fan favourite at the Brindy but in less than a period wearing the Red and Black that all changed, “probably not even a period; might have even been after his first shift.” Head Coach Lee Stone explains further, “I remember in that home opener, he was out banging away, creating open ice and he might have even picked up a couple of points (3 actually). It didn’t take long for the boys and the fans to appreciate him.”

Brett spent most of his Junior career with the VIJHL Glacier Kings and BCHL Trail Smoke Eaters. In 221 regular season games, he accumulated 157 points and 667 penalty minutes. Despite being recognized for most of his career as a physical presence, Brett demonstrated that he could play Storm hockey. Coach Stone sees the 5’10” forward as a leader, “Sheldon won our Coaches Award, a guy that exemplifies want we want to see from our guys in our room and on the ice. He really came through in the playoffs and particularly played well through some injuries. He was impressive.”

Last season, the Storm won the VIJHL Championship in a dramatic 7 game series with Brett scoring key goals in games 6 and 7. The club moved onto the Cyclone Taylor Cup where they captured silver in the provincial tournament.

The UNLV Rebels open their season on September 15 at Arizona State University.
