Mike Wilson

“When you get to come into a team with a winning pedigree and a skillset like this team has, it’s a lot of fun for a coach. I’m ready to go”.

The Campbell River Storm Junior Hockey Club is pleased to announce the hiring of Mike Wilson as an associate coach.

As a fourteen year old bantam in the North Delta Minor Hockey Association, Mike was described as an extremely intense competitor, one of the hardest working players with a strong desire to win.

Twelve years later, he brings that same desire to coaching, “I’ve always been a goal-oriented guy, always wanted to be at the highest level, always taking it to the next level and knowing where I want to be.” Given the talent he’s seen in the Storms’ play, Wilson feels confident that he can make a difference focussing on fine tuning and systems.

Mike recently graduated from Concordia, University of Edmonton, where he played for the Thunder in the ACAC. Storm alum, Josiah Friesen, plays in the same league.

In parts of four seasons as a junior, “Willy” played 148 games in the PIJHL (now the PJHL) averaging a point a game. In his final year, he captained the North Delta Devils accumulating 52 points in 39 games.

“I always knew I wanted to step up and play Junior A and got an opportunity from a scout who got me into a tournament called the Chowder Cup”. The coaches of the host team, the Walpole Express, were impressed with his play so they signed him. Mike says of Head Coach, Mark Kempel, “He was a good hockey mind that helped shape my hockey mind-set”. Kempel, a member of the 1984 US Olympic hockey team, played 288 NHL games with the Nordiques, Red Wings and Jets; he is currently the director of hockey operations of the Eastern Hockey League.

The Storm’s new assistant coach also played some ‘A with the Quesnel Millionaires of the BCHL and the Fort Frances Junior Sabres of the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

He is looking forward to getting behind the Campbell River Storm bench, “I’m really excited to get underway”.

Mike Wilson joins a coaching staff that includes the General Manager/Head Coach Lee Stone, Assistant Coach Brendan Enns, and Goalie Coach Andy Seppanen.
